The hula is more than a dance, it is part of the cultural system of Hawaii. Sacredness is a large part of this culture and to properly understand the hula you must feel beyond the movements and hand motions. Hula is not learned in a few lessons or even a few years, it takes great commitment and study.
I teach Hula Kahiko (ancient), Hula Auana (modern), Hula Hapa-haole (english form), Tahitian, Maori, and Samoan. I like to make all your dances fun and interesting. I do most of my own choreography so I am able to choose from a great variety of music.
In my beginning classes for both children and adults, you will be learning the basic steps along with the Hawaiian words for them. A beginners dance will follow once I feel you can accomplish the simplest of the steps. The first few classes may feel overwhelming but after a few lessons you will start to get a feel for the movements.
I have one hoike (recital) per year usually in the spring. We also have private performances throught the year. These are not required but recommended to give you experience and cofidence in your study. Each learning level dancer can perform but only the advanced and professional dancers will be compensated.
Due to the multi polynesian dances, your body will experience a very well rounded exercise and we highly recommend you contact your doctor if you have any concerns with your health such as arthritis etc.
Halau Hula O Ka Hale 'Aina translates as "dance studio of the restaurant". This came about after the halau practiced in the second floor of my former restaurant. I have been teaching for five years and have been dancing for more than 20 years. The studio recently moved to the back of my newly formed gift shop/dance studio "Tropical Teri's" but the name remains the same since this is the studio's origin. The photos above were taken at events the halau has performed at.
We welcome all experience levels ages 6 years and above. The halau is also available to perform for your luau, birthday party, anniversaries or any function for a fee.
Children ages 6-12: $40 per month. Adults 12 and up $50 per month.
This includes one hour of instruction per week. All dues need to be paid on the first day of practice of the month. Checks are made payable to Tropical Teri's. Any missed practices can be made up and monthly dues will remain the same. You need to bring to class the following items: blank cassette tape for recording songs, comfortable clothing, and a water bottle.
For more information about classes, you can call me at the shop during business hours at 360-939-0972 or email anytime at hulamomster@juno.com
